At least AIPAC is explicitly a lobby organization, I find the behavior of supposedly civil right orgs like ADL more irresponsible. I’m not saying they should never call out Mamdani for some of the Israel stuff but there’s something unhinged about the level of scrutiny and reading supposed malice into his every tweet and action and loudly denouncing as insincere or insufficient any effort by him to assuage concerns. I’ve seen Jonathan Greenblatt call a New York Post story about DSA and Mamdani taxing the rich antisemitic because most of the CEOs it named were Jewish. I’ve seen him complain and imply antisemitism because Mamdani did not identify someone as explicitly Jewish while celebrating his work in an Eastern European celebration tweet. Mamdani mostly ignores it, and tries to engage with more reasonable critics but someone less disciplined, like El Sayed, worries me. If politicians start treating the ADL or mainstream Jewish groups as toxic, it’s not healthy for Jewish communal life.

As a diaspora Israeli just back from voting in the election (no overseas voting in Israeli elections):

Smart Israelis do see what's coming down the pike. The week of the elections Bibi was asked what he'd do if Israel faced financial sanctions and he said he'd switch the country over to crypto. The Bank of Israel said this was madness - imagine the Fed coming out 4 days from a Presidential to say the incumbent President's economic plan doesn't make sense.

The average voter, obviously, is not seeing this yet. Their lived experience is the daily grind of fighting the Palestinians, Hizballah etc and they seem to struggle to conceive of how much bigger a risk a proper loss of international legitimacy would represent.

I am hopeful that when the turn in US and international policy comes it is not too brutal and Israel has time to adapt. Israel has plenty of chips to concede...Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, West Bank conditions etc. Of course some people won't be happy till the "Jews go back to Poland", but, again, I'm hopeful that most people mean it that what they really want is an improvement in the human rights situation rather than Israel's destruction and will be satisfied if meaningful but limited concessions are made.
