Re what to do on immigration: process stuff faster! There is currently a 24 month backlog for spousal green card processing, getting slower at >1month/month. Despite being a bigger deal for legal immigrants than any fantasy about abolishing ICE, this (very effective) destruction of the system has attracted zero attention from Ds

The reasons for opposing data center construction are so disingenuous and generally incorrect. I see Democrats who promote this view as being in the same category as MAGA anti-vax folks. Not scientific, opposing progress, NIMBY etc.. Of course there are some bad locations, and there is no need to give tax breaks, and don't do it in secret - but those can be fixed. If I was in a small rural town with no industrial tax base, or in a town or city with large brownfield location I would be wide open to this kind of industry. And it is industry - it uses power, a small amount of water, and - if the main grid fails and backup generators kick can cause some air pollution. But I can't see the same level of opposition if those impacts were generated by a car component factory, or paper products plant.

(Here in Montgomery County outside DC, there is even strong opposition to building data centers on the site of power station and trash incinerator - a location where a data center would seem to be a clear upgrade, and one where the power feed is there, the cooling water is there, and the location is somewhat isolated.)

So this opposition has to be driven by a general fear over AI and the general opposition to the tech bro elite. So politicians who are pro growth and pro future and want to bring positive change need to find a way to talk about this rationally - because in the end the data centers will get built somewhere, in some country, and the AI will impact you. So why not have a tax base (and a few jobs) in that empty field on the edge of town?
