“Politics is a strong and slow boring of hard boards. It takes both passion and perspective.” — Max Weber, Politics as a Vocation

Campaigns and elections influence policy, and policy has immense, sometimes life-or-death consequences. High-minded ideals are worth nothing unless accompanied by a strategy to win.

Slow Boring is a newsletter and blog by Matthew Yglesias on the substantive, tactical, and strategic aspects of American politics and public policy. We aim to bring not just passion but perspective, an element often missing in a contemporary media landscape driven by algorithms, clicks, conformism, and fads.

A better world is possible, but its realization requires conversations that are difficult and rigorous and that do not always flatter our biases. This is a site for anyone interested in joining those conversations.
