I think a crucial question is being skipped over here. If we had invested more in the war, it would have gone better. But would it have gone well enough to cause the people who opposed the government to give up? And would we have been able to create a government that was seen as mostly legitimate by most of the people, in the way that for example the Iraqi government is.

Iraq had the advantage that no one was a sincere Baathist in 2003, and that the ethnic majority was opposed to the regime. It's much less clear that a similarly good outcome was available in Afghanistan.

(Just to be clear, invading Iraq was bad and not justified by the relative success of the postwar government. It's just a helpful comparison case.)

>If the United States had done an Iraq-scale troop deployment at the time, the insurgency never would have gained strength.<

So, if our nation building invasion had only been mounted on a much larger scale (vastly more expensive, far more dead Americans?) it would have resulted in a permanent defeat of the Taliban, at least provided said invasion had triggered desirable cooperation on the part of Pakistan? Hmm...

(All the while a Communist dictatorship on the other side of the Pacific from us was rapidly narrowing the gap between their capabilities and ours; they were happy to see our attentions diverted.)

I'm skeptical.

The particular form of government that obtains in a landlocked, medieval central Asian nation is not a vital interest of the United States of America. It may be *an* interest, sure. Just like we'd prefer to see Turkmenistan and Haiti well-governed. But an interest worthy of a massive and ruinously expensive invasion and rebuilding project in a country that has successfully resisted every empire that laid a glove on it for centuries? That's a reach.

For the record I completely concur with Matt our initial military response was warranted. The Taliban was an accomplice in the worst attack on the US homeland since Lee invaded Pennsylvania, and it deserved a biblically violent thrashing.

But our invasion, while maximally punitive, should also have been brief. I vehemently disagree with Matt on this one.
